Probing an Ultra-low velocity zone at the Core Mantle Boundary with 13 and S Waves

چکیده
Recent studies of the core-mantle boundary (CMB) have revealed some very anomalous tructures interpreted in terms of ultra low velocity zones (ULVZ). However, there remains considerable uncertainties about their physical descriptions or even if they occur above or below the CMB. They have only been detected in isolated situations using rather special techniques; these includes: distortions in SKS with the development of SKPdS and SPdKS, broadband PKP precursors, distinct ScS and S beyond 100 degree, and rapid changes in differential travel times of neighboring phases. Here we report on a situation where ray paths associated with PKP precursors and SKPdS sample the same ULVZ structure. The structure lies beneath central Africa and has been detected from WWSSN analog data (SKPdS) discussed previously. This data set has been enhanced with a collection of digital records sampling an elongated NorthSouth zone roughly 800 km long. The entire SKPdS data set can be modeled with a ridge-shaped cross section with widths of 250 to 400 km and drops in P and S velocity of 10 and 30 percent. Fortunately, a new IRIS station (MSKU) located in Western Africa provided excellent PKP data from the New Britain Region events sampling the above structure. The PKP and strong precursors can be modeled by 2D synthetics generated from the same structure (used in modeling SKPdS) which provides a strong constraint on the definition characteristics of this particular ULVZ.

Detection of an Ultra Low Velocity Zone beneath Central Mexico with PcP Waveform Modeling
PcP phases from a Guatemalan earthquake recorded at Nevada stations of the International seismic network (IM) display evidence of anomalous seismic structure at the core-mantle boundary (CMB); in particular, preand post-cursor phases to PcP and ScP. The data is examined for evidence of an ultra-low velocity zone (ULVZ) by identifying and modeling precursors to PcP. Precursory arrivals to PcP ma...

Short- and long-period precursors of the PKP phase were used to study an ultra-low velocity zone (ULVZ) near the core-mantle boundary beneath the Western Pacific. Synthetic seismograms were computed from a hybrid method, which handles seismic wave propagation through two-dimensional complex structures. Long-period precursors were explained by Gaussian-shaped ULVZs of 60 to 80 kilometers height ...

Profiles of SH waves diffracted around the core (Sd) for three deep events at stations across North America and the Atlantic (4 = 92 ° to 152 °) are used to determine the properties of the lower mantle in the vicinity of the core-manUe boundary (CMB). The S-wave velocity above the CMB is found to be tic = 7.22 __ 0.1 km/sec, in agreement with gross earth models, but higher than previously repor...
متن کاملModeling the ratios of SKKS and SKS amplitudes with ultra-low velocity zones at the core-mantle boundary
[1] Between 105–115 degrees, the SKS waveform is complicated by the formation of SPdKS, a wave that has segments of P diffraction along the core mantle boundary. While previous studies have primarily focused on the moveout of SPdKS from SKS, we analyze the concomitant reduction of the SKS amplitude. Long-period SKKS/SKS amplitude ratios present a coherent global pattern. SKKS/ SKS is relatively...

The Zagros collision zone is known as an active tectonic zone that represents the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian and Arabian plates. A popular strategy for gaining insight into the upper mantle processes is to examine the splitting of seismic shear waves and interpret them in terms of upper mantle anisotropy and deformation. Core phases SK(K)S from over 278 earthquakes (MW ≥ ...
